「病院求め決死の出国～医療さえ受けられぬミャンマーの現実」
～日本テレビ「ＮＥＷＳ ＺＥＲＯ」（１０月２９日放送）～
タイ北西部、国境の町、メソト。
軍事政権から弾圧された多くのミャンマー人がこの町に逃れて暮らしている。
そんなタイ側の国境の町に、無料で診察を行う病院がある。
病院を開設したのは１人の女性だった。
「メータオ・クリニック」。シンシア・マウン医師（４９歳）。
彼女自身もミャンマーからの難民であり、
この地で1989年の開設以来、毎日３００人を超える患者の診察に無料で当たっている。

1988年の民主化運動が弾圧された後、国境に逃れたミャンマー人を保護する目的で、
マウン医師によって設立。以来２０年間、無償での医療奉仕活動に専念してきた。
その活動が認められ、２００２年にはアジアのノーベル平和賞と言われる
「マグサイサイ賞」を受賞した。
患者の多くは、タイで働くミャンマー人の不法労働者。
さらにミャンマーに住む人が国境を越え、この病院を目指してやって来る。
密入国者も少なくない。
ミャンマーでは保険制度もないため、治療費が高く、
まともな医療が受けられないためだという。
掘立小屋から始まったメータオクリニック。
世界中から支援が集まり、いまでは総合病院に成長した。
小児科病棟では、マラリアや、結核、エイズ、栄養失調の子供たちが
母親に付き添われ入院していた。
産婦人科にいた夫婦も、出産のため国境を越えた。
２００キロも離れたミャンマー・ヤンゴンから来たという。
夫は言う。
「この病院しか頼るところがありません。
ミャンマー国内で出産するとお金がかかります。
経済的に苦しいので出産費用を負担できないのです」
ミャンマーでは、産科医が少なく、費用も高いため、
国内の病院で出産できる人は、ごくわずか。
ほとんどが自宅などでの出産だという。
この病院では、毎年１２００人以上の子供が生まれる。
中には、母親が子供を産み捨て、置き去りにされた子もいる。
（母親はメータオクリニックで出産後、この子を置いて姿を消した）
「この子は難民のため、タイにもミャンマーにも
戸籍が作れません。
だから誰とも養子縁組が出来ないのです」
と、シンシア医師は言う。
避難生活ではミャンマーに出生届も出せず、
国籍はないままだ。
国民が医療を十分な受けられないミャンマーの現状。
メータオ・クリニックは、そんな彼らの命を繋いでいた。
シンシア医師は、
「ミャンマーの人たちが、この病院を必要としている限り
ずっと無料で医療を提供し続ける」と語った。
メータオ・クリニックでは、現在、
７人の医師を含む５００人を超すボランティアスタッフが働いている。
その中で日本人スタッフも現在３名働いていた。

十分な医療が受けられず、出産すらできずに、
国境を越えるミャンマー人たち。
彼らの苦しみはいつまで続くのだろうか…。
