１１月５日、タイ、ビルマ（ミャンマー）国境の町にある病院を訪れた。
１１月７日に行われるビルマ総選挙を控え、隣国タイではいくつかの国境は閉じ、国境線の警戒は厳しくなった。
それは、普段国境を関係なく行き来する地元民に被害が生じたが、ビルマ軍政の迫害から逃れてきたカレン人達にとってもさらに深刻な被害をもたらしていた。
メータオ・クリニックは１９８９年に難民だったシンシア・マウンさんが設立。
タイはビルマ国境の町メソットにある。
ビルマ側では治療が受けられない国内難民や、カレン人たちが越境してやってくる病院だ。
もちろんメソットに住んでいる人も診察を受けに来る。
医師や看護婦は現地スタッフと海外からのボランティア、ＮＧＯなどの支援によって運営され、医療設備や、患者の金銭的な問題などを抱えながらも診察を続けている。
多くの患者は、マラリアや結核などだ。
ＨＩＶの可能性のある患者も来るが、検査が高額なため診断することが出来ない事が多い。
外来患者の３分の１以上は小児科だ、風邪や栄養失調の子供が多い。日本では問題にならない病気を悪化させて来る子供が多いという。
産科もあるため年間２０００人の新生児を取り出しており、生まれた彼らには記録が残らないため、病院で出生証明書を作るサービスも行っている。
地雷を踏んで足を無くしてしまう人もいるため義足も製造しており、他にも外科、眼科なども作られている。
スタッフに話を聞くと一日３００人の外来患者が来ていたそうだが、選挙間近になり国境を閉じ、国境線の警戒が厳しくなってからの外来患者は一日３，４０人ほどまで激減してしまった。
選挙前だからか、私が失礼な事をしてしまったのか、クリニックのスタッフも患者もピリピリとした感じが受け取れた。
彼らは不法入国して来ているため、写真を撮るときも気を使う。
しかも、カレン人難民が越境して診察を受けに来るのは大変なリスクを伴う。
彼らはビルマ、タイのＩＤを所持できず、タイの警察に捕まると賄賂を払って見逃してもらうか、そのまま刑務所へ入れられてしまう。
もちろん、彼らはそんな大金は持ち合わせてはいない。
医療スタッフの話では病院の入り口の前で警官が張り込みをして、外来患者が来院出来なくなってしまった事もあったそうだ。
２カ国の国境に翻弄される人々を前に、ボランティアスタッフはここで出来ることを出来る限り行うと静かに語った。

外来患者の多くは小児科だ。ここでは日本ではすぐ治る病気も、ひどく悪化させて連れてこられる子供も多い。
外科病棟の隅に収容されている患者。口をパクパクさせ深く息を繰り返すが、意識があるのかどうかは分からない。喋れる状態にないまま運ばれてきたので名前も、年齢も分からない。運ばれてきた時の状況を知る人はビルマ軍に捕まり、荷物運びで酷使されて逃げてきたそうだ。暴行された形跡もあった。が、本人から事実は聞くことは出来なかった。１週間前に運ばれてきたが、クリニックではどうすることも出来ないという。
クリニックの手術室。ここですべての手術を行うが設備が十分ではないため、難しい手術は他の病院で行うこともある。
義足を製作する工場。地雷で足を失う人も多い。
治療を受けた子供。ビルマ側では迫害に加え、医療も遅れているため、子供を亡くす人たちが多い。無料で診察してくれるクリニックは彼らにとってありがたい。
産科もあり、多くの新生児を取り上げているが、生まれてくる子供は未熟児が多い。原因は妊婦の栄養失調や、妊娠中に病気にかかってしまう事だという。
協力して検査を行う日本人ボランティア医師。彼らは政治的、宗教的な思想はなく、一人の医者として、日本では少ない臨床経験を得、クリニックの医療の向上を目的としてボランティアに加わっている。
