我が国は東日本大震災という千年に一度ともいわれる巨大災害の最中にある。地震と津波による直接的被害だけではなく、原発事故による眼に見えない放射能汚染が急速に広まり、FUKUSHIMAはもはや国際語として通用してしまう。東京では震災前の日常にほぼ戻りつつある雰囲気だが、日本全土が震災に多くの関心を寄せていたこの数ヶ月の間にも、世界中は動いていたのである。
＜今なぜ中東なのか＞
チュニジアでのジャスミン革命を発端とし、エジプトでの大規模反政府デモやリビアでの騒乱など、中東全域に民主化運動が波及していったのはまだ記憶に新しい。そして、その背景には、インターネットの発展が大きく影響している。FacebookやTwitter、WikiLeaksといったソーシャル・ネットワーク・サービスおよびネットメディアの台頭によって引き起こされた必然の出来事であったといっても過言ではない。また、アルジャジーラの奮闘も印象的だった。しかし、何よりも、国民が自らの命を懸けて民主主義のために戦う姿には感動すら覚えた。当たり前のようで当たり前ではない。今回の中東での一連の出来事から、国家は国民のためにあるのだと学ばされた。それは他人事ではなく、先進国と呼ばれる日本でも同じであると感じる。
＜報道は正義のため？＞
さて、ほんの一ヶ月ほど前の５月１日に突然、米軍によるウサマ・ビンラディン氏殺害というニュースが飛び込んできた。米国はテロとの戦いという名目のもと、９．１１米同時多発テロが発生してから十年余りも正義という凶器を振りかざしてきた。米国にとっての正義が多くの一般市民を巻き添えにしてきた訳だが、今回の出来事によってオバマ米大統領は「正義はなされた」と宣言したそうである。しかし、なぜビンラディン氏は拘束ではなく殺害されたのか。なぜ２４時間以内に水葬されたのか。そもそも本当に殺害されたのかということすら疑わしく感じてしまう。残念だが確証のある報道は一つもなく、違和感を感じずにはいられない。
＜求められる、メディアリテラシー＞
今回の座談会を通して、私は「メディアリテラシー」が一番のキーワードだと感じている。新聞を読むときやニュースを見るとき、情報を読み解く力が我々に求められているのだと痛切に思い知らされた。インターネットの発展によって莫大な情報が錯綜する現代社会においては、なおさらである。
常岡浩介氏、重信メイ氏という現場に精通したジャーナリストの濃厚な話が凝縮された２時間だった。未曽有の災害に揺れる日本、報道の力が問われている時期でもある。
