在日ビルマ人らおよそ500人が先月18日、都内で集会を開き、ビルマ軍事政権が11月7日に実施する予定の総選挙は、不当であり、非民主的だとして、中止するよう訴えた。

参加者らは、JR恵比寿駅近くの公園から、民主化運動指導者のアウン・サン・スー・チーさんの写真を掲げながら、「日本政府と日本国民の皆さん、ビルマ軍事政権が強行する不当な総選挙を認めないでください」と声を上げ、JR千駄ヶ谷駅近くの公園までデモ行進した。
参加した在日ビルマ人のタン・スエさんは、「総選挙を国民は認めない。なぜなら、総選挙は、軍事政権のための選挙であり、国民のための選挙ではないからだ」と主張した。
また、国連人権理事会のキンタナ特別報告者は今月20日、「総選挙のプロセスに深刻な欠陥がある。表現や結社の自由が選挙法の下で厳しく制限されている」と述べた。
これに先立ち、ビルマ軍事政権の選挙管理委員会は、総選挙実施時に国際選挙監視団や外国報道機関の記者の入国を認めない方針を示している。
