タイ北部にあるビルマ難民キャンプを訪れた。
タイ国内に数あるビルマ難民キャンプの中でも、比較的自由に行き来できる場所にあり、比較的恵まれたキャンプだ。電気はソーラーパネルで充電し、共有スペースに使うだけで各家には電気は引かれていない。水、トイレもすべてが共用になっているが最低限のものは揃っている。
ここの住人はビルマの、タイのＩＤも持っていない、住人達は隣国ビルマで２００２年に起った戦闘で村ごと逃げてきた人たちだった。

水周りのことはここですべて済ます。
ビルマに住んでいたときの事を語ってくれた。夕飯の支度で忙しそうだった。
「ビルマ軍が村にやってくると女、子供を残して男は全員逃げる。男が見つかると殺されるか、ポーターとして全員連れて行かれる。
女、子供が残る理由は村に誰もいなくなると、食料や家畜をビルマ軍に略奪され皆生きていけなくなるから。
そして、ビルマ軍は次の村への案内役として女を何人か連れて行く。
道中はビルマ軍の世話をさせられ、レイプされ、最後には殺される。運がよかったら解放される。」
「ビルマ軍が村に来たとき、私と子供達は地下の部屋に隠れました。
彼らは私の夫に２００バーツ出せと言ったのですが、夫は２０バーツしかないと言った瞬間に撃たれ殺されました。国が平和になっても嫌なことばかりだったからもう帰りたくない。」
キャンプで一番高齢の女性。９３歳ということだが、３年前も９３歳と言っていたらしい。

このキャンプに逃げてきたお年寄りは嫌な顔せず、ビルマに住んでいたときの事を教えてくれた。お茶もご馳走してもらった。
キャンプの男達は昼間に畑を耕し、採れたものを売って賃金を得ている。
中には都市部へ出稼ぎに行き、建設業などの労働で仕送りをしているものなど様々だ。
だが、出稼ぎ組もタイのＩＤを所持しておらず、不法滞在に当たるゆえ都市部へ出て稼ぐにもそれなりのリスクがある。
実際、チェックポイントは帰りの方が多く、厳しかった。
中国人も多く住むこの地域では中国語も教えていた。この少数民族も中国に多く住んでいるという。
真剣に授業を受ける子供達。
難民キャンプの長が英語が堪能なため、子供達に英語を教えていた。辞書はみんなで使いまわしている。
子供達はキャンプ近くの学校へ通わせてもらっている。キャンプがある地域は国が違えこそ、同じ民族同士ということで受け入れてもらっている事だそうだ。
子供達がキャンプに帰ると、また勉強が始まる。
この日は英語の授業で大人が子供達に教えていた。
子供達は真剣に授業を受ける。
授業風景を撮影していると子供達からは、生きるために学んでいるというのを感じられる。
教育を受けられるというのは彼らにとって幸運であり、チャンスでもあった。
学生時代に勉強をあまりしなかった私は、少し恥ずかしくなった。
昼間に話を聞いた老婆の、子供達が元気で大人になってくれてよかった、としみじみ語ってくれた事を思い出した。
小、中学生のクラス。教科書が一つしかないため、みんな書き写していた。
このクラスはお寺の中で行われていた。
